Una sera, come tante altre, ho deciso di andare al cinema. Sono entrata in una sala, senza nessuna aspettativa, con il solo desiderio di vedere una storia sul grande schermo. Dal film scelto solo per una coincidenza di orario - era lo spettacolo che iniziava per primo - non mi aspettavo niente di particolare, anzi, neppure credevo che mi sarebbe piaciuto. Poi, pero', più le immagini scorrevano e più cominciavo ad avere il sospetto che mi sarei ricordata di questo film. A dire il vero, quando é finito non sono uscita con la consapevolezza di aver visto un capolavoro ma non é sempre questo il metro di misura con cui si dovrebbero valutare una storia, a volte potrebbe valere quello che diceva il giovane Holden, “Quelli che mi lasciano senza fiato sono i libri che quando hai finito di leggere vorresti che l’autore fosse un tuo amico per la pelle e poterlo chiamare al telefono tutte le volte che ti gira”. E quando é finito “Io prima di te” avrei voluto essere la migliore amica di Louisa “Lou” Clark (Emilia Clarke), ma credo che mi accontenterei anche solo di avere il suo numero di telefono perché vuol dire che mi conosce e che potrebbe chiamarmi, anche se non lo fa mai. Mi é stato fatto notare che la mia passione per il cinema non é esattamente popolare. I film di cui ho scritto in passato appartengono spesso a quelle che sono le nicchie dell’industria oppure di generi meno frequentati. Mi sono a volte concessa degli excursus nel campo del mainstream per scrivere di Costume Design, quindi in pratica un'eccezione per un dettaglio che persino dalla cerimonia di assegnazione degli Oscar viene tagliato quando viene condensato lo show per le repliche del giorno successivo. La verità é che io frequento il cinema di tutti i tipi e di tutti i generi e, come si dice per le donne, c’é sempre un particolare per cui vale la pena. E un personaggio come Lou, la protagonista con un cuore grande e il look di “una drag queen dei folletti”, vale tutto il film. Purtroppo, poiché Lou é un personaggio di finzione e quindi non posso chiamarla per telefono, mi sono accontentata di comprare un paio di calze a righe gialle e nere come quelle che riceve per il compleanno da Will Traynor (Sam Claflin) regalandoci una delle scene di entusiasmo più memorabili. Mi sono presa la licenza poetica di sostituire le calzamaglia d’ape a righe gialle e nere con un modello autoreggente ma tutto il resto sarà esattamente lo stesso: camicia bianca, gonna a ruota blu, rossetto rosso e café ai tavolini esterni del Restaurant Paul su Place Dauphine a Parigi.

Per chi vuole ripercorre anche le altre location del film tratto dal romanzo di Jojo Moyes suggerisco il seguente percorso: prendere un aereo per la Gran Bretagna e raggiungere il Pembrokeshire, nel Galles, che ha rappresentato la cittadina locale dove si trova il castello di famiglia dei Traynor (nella realtà Pembroke Castle) così come le scene ambientate al The Buttered Bun Café. In paio di ore in auto si raggiunge l’Abbazia di Wytham, nell’Oxfordshire, dove una casa padronale privata é diventata la casa di famiglia dei Traynor all’interno delle mura del castello. Da qui, sempre in auto, in meno di un’ora si arriva a Chenies Manor House, nel Buckinghamshire, dove Lou accompagna Will al matrimonio, per poi proseguire fino ad Harrow, un quartiere a nord di Londra, per gli esterni dell’abitazione dei Clark. Se si resiste dal fermarsi a Londra, dirigendosi a sud della città si trova lo storico ippodromo Sandown Park a Esher, nel Surrey, dove sono state girate le scene alle corse di cavalli (e gli esterni dell’aeroporto). Il tour si conclude prendendo un volo per Palma de Majorca per una fuga romantica come Lou e Will in un paradiso tropicale. Nel libro (e nel film) andavano nelle Mauritius, ma la produzione ha invece girato sulla spiaggia di Playa Formentor e nel Barcelo Formentor Hotel. Quindi, vivete con coraggio, vivete bene... e viaggiate!

[eng] One evening, like so many others, I decided to go to the cinema. They entered, without any expectations, with the only desire to see a story on the big screen. The film only chosen for a time coincidence - was the show that started first - I was not expecting anything special, in fact, even I believed that I would have liked. Then, though, most were streaming images and more I began to suspect that I would have remembered me about this film. Actually, when it is finished I did not leave with the knowledge that he had seen a masterpiece, but it is not always the yardstick by which you should consider a story, sometimes it might be one that said the Catcher in the Rye “Those who leave me breathless are the books that when you're done reading you would like that the author was a friend to the skin and can call on the phone every time you turn”. And when it is finished, “Me Before You” I wanted to be the best friend of Louisa "Lou" Clark (Emilia Clarke), but I think I'd be happy just to have her phone number because it means that I know and that could call me, even if he never does. It was pointed out that my passion for film is not exactly popular. The films that I wrote in the past are often from those that are the industry niches or less popular genres. I sometimes granted the excursus in the field of mainstreaming to write Costume Design, so in practice an exception for a detail that even the award ceremony of the Oscars is cut when the show is condensed for the replicas of the next day. The truth is that I attend the cinema of all kinds and of all kinds and, as they say for women, there is always a particular worth. And someone like Lou, the main character with a big heart and the “look a drag queen of the fairies”, that the whole movie. Unfortunately, because Lou is a fictional character and therefore can not call by phone, I settled to buy a pair of socks with yellow and black stripes like those it receives to the birthday by Will Traynor (Sam Claflin) giving us one of the scenes most memorable enthusiasm. I have taken the poetic license to replace the bee tights in yellow and black striped with a hold-up stockings but everything else will be exactly the same: white shirt, blue skirt, red lipstick and café at the Restaurant Paul on Place Dauphine in Paris.

For those who want even traces the other of the stretch film location by Jojo Moyes novel suggest the following route: take a plane to Britain and reach Pembrokeshire, Wales, which was the local town where the family castle of Traynor (in reality Pembroke Castle) as well as the scenes at the Buttered Bun Café. In two hours by car arriving to the Abbey of Wytham, Oxfordshire, where a private manor house has become the family home of Traynor within the castle walls. From here, always by car, in less than an hour you get to Chenies Manor House, Buckinghamshire, where Lou accompanies Will at wedding, and then continue to Harrow, an area in northwest London, for the exterior of Clark’s house. If you resist unstopping in London, heading south of the city it is the historic  Sandown Park in Esher, Surrey, where filmed the scenes of horse racing (and outside of the airport). The tour concludes by taking a flight to Palma de Mallorca for a romantic getaway as the Lou and Will in a tropical paradise. In the book (and the movie) they were in Mauritius, but production has instead turned on the beach in Playa Formentor and at the Hotel Barcelo Formentor.

So, live boldly, live well... and travel!
